The Carlsbad Lancers JV girls flag football team improved to 9-1 with a 19-12 road win over Torrey Pines on Wednesday, Sept. 23.

The victory extended a dominant stretch for the Lancers, who have outscored opponents 264-39 across 10 games this season, according to MaxPreps. That 39-point defensive total works out to fewer than four points allowed per game.

The defense has carried the season.

Carlsbad posted shutouts against Rancho Bernardo (27-0 on Wednesday, Sept. 9), La Costa Canyon (7-0 on Wednesday, Sept. 16) and Steele Canyon (26-0 on Aug. 27). The Lancers also rolled past Oceanside 33-6 on Tuesday, Sept. 22, one day before heading to Torrey Pines.

The Sept. 16 shutout of La Costa Canyon was a crosstown matchup between two Carlsbad schools. The Lancers held La Costa Canyon scoreless in a 7-0 home win.

Torrey Pines fell to 1-7 with the loss. The 12 points the squad scored were the most Carlsbad allowed in any of the five games with available box scores this season.

Carlsbad travels to Mission Hills in San Marcos on Wednesday, Sept. 30, at 5:30 p.m. for a non-league game. The Grizzlies enter at 3-6 overall after dropping a 14-7 league game to La Costa Canyon, according to MaxPreps scheduling data.

The common-opponent edge tilts heavily toward Carlsbad. Mission Hills has gone 0-1 against each of the four opponents both teams have faced: La Costa Canyon, Rancho Bernardo, Steele Canyon and Oceanside. Carlsbad beat all four, three of them by shutout.

With one loss on the season and league play still ahead, the Lancers' Sept. 30 trip to San Marcos is the next chance to see whether the defense can keep up its pace against a Grizzlies offense that has scored 90 points in nine games.
