Carlsbad High's varsity boys water polo team beat La Costa Canyon 19-17 on the road Tuesday, Sept. 15, improving to 6-3 on the season.

The non-conference matchup between two Carlsbad-based schools produced 36 combined goals at La Costa Canyon's pool. The Mavericks dropped to 3-5 with the loss.

Individual scoring leaders and quarter-by-quarter breakdowns were not available from the MaxPreps boxscore.

The Lancers entered the game after beating Rio Americano of Sacramento 13-6 in a neutral tournament game on Friday, Sept. 11, when their record stood at 5-2. The two-goal margin against La Costa Canyon was tighter than that seven-goal win four days earlier.

The JV matchup went the other way. La Costa Canyon's JV squad topped Carlsbad 16-10 on the same afternoon, moving to 2-0 while Carlsbad JV fell to 0-2.

La Costa Canyon is part of the San Dieguito Union High School District, based in Encinitas. Both programs compete in the CIF San Diego Section. Carlsbad plays in the North County Coastal League alongside Torrey Pines, Canyon Crest, Oceanside, Poway and Westview, as listed on the Torrey Pines water polo program's 2026 fall schedule.

What's next for the Lancers

Carlsbad has a home game scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 17, though the opponent had not been confirmed as of publication. The Lancers also have games listed for Friday, Sept. 18, and Friday, Sept. 25, with opponents still to be announced, according to SI.com schedule data.

The next confirmed opponent is Westview, scheduled for a home game on Tuesday, Sept. 29, at 4:30 p.m.
