A wildfire that erupted on Camp Pendleton on Thursday, Oct. 15, burned 1,404 acres, shut down Interstate 5 during rush hour and prompted a smoke advisory covering Carlsbad.
The Henderson Fire started at 2:35 p.m. near Henderson Street and Brown Street on the Marine Corps base, according to CAL FIRE's incident page. The blaze grew to roughly 400 acres within 90 minutes. By 8:14 p.m., it had reached 1,404 acres with zero containment.
Santa Ana winds out of the east pushed the fire westward, CHP Oceanside Area reported. The blaze threatened structures and overhead power lines, and four airtankers joined ground crews, according to CAL FIRE.
I-5 closed, then reopened
The fire forced a full closure of I-5 in both directions between Harbor Drive in Oceanside and Basilone Road. CHP Oceanside Area announced the northbound shutdown at 5:05 p.m. and the southbound closure 10 minutes later.
By 6 p.m., CHP Oceanside Area reported all lanes open but warned that "the highway may be closed again immediately if conditions require."
Evacuation order lifted
Camp Pendleton officials ordered the Las Flores area, known as 41 Area, to evacuate, directing personnel to Paige Field House in the 11 Area, according to CAL FIRE. A secondary evacuation point was set up at the 21 Area gym.
The evacuation order was lifted by 7:30 p.m., Times of San Diego reported. No evacuations were ordered outside the base. No structural damage or injuries were reported, according to Times of San Diego.
Smoke advisory covers Carlsbad
The San Diego County Air Pollution Control District (SDAPCD) issued a smoke advisory listing Carlsbad, Oceanside and Vista among affected communities. The advisory said a large fire burning in Las Pulgas Canyon was producing significant smoke, and northeast winds were expected to push it southwest toward the ocean.
The City of Carlsbad shared the advisory on social media, urging residents to review the SDAPCD's guidance.
The SDAPCD said residents who smell smoke should limit outdoor activity and stay indoors when possible. People with respiratory or heart disease, the elderly and children face the greatest risk, the district said.
What's next
The fire's cause remains under investigation. Camp Pendleton Fire Department has jurisdiction, and no incident management team had been assigned as of CAL FIRE's 8:14 p.m. update.
CHP Oceanside Area said additional freeway closures may follow if conditions worsen. CAL FIRE and the California Governor's Office of Emergency Services prepositioned firefighters, engines, aircraft and equipment across Southern California for deployment through Sunday, Oct. 18, according to The Watchers.
