Darian Webb has 728 rushing yards, 10 touchdowns and zero scholarship offers.

Webb, an 18-year-old senior running back, has averaged 11.7 yards per carry through four games for 4-0 Carlsbad High. The Lancers are ranked No. 1 in the CIF San Diego Section, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported Thursday, Sept. 17. Webb has also caught nine passes for 120 yards.

Yet college recruiters have been slow to call. Webb told the Union-Tribune he has drawn interest from UC Davis and Idaho State but has not received a scholarship offer.

Coach Thadd MacNeal, in his 21st season as a high school head coach, pointed to Webb's limited playing time last year as the reason. In 2025, Webb rushed for 345 yards, third on the team behind Kai Brown's 997 and Ian Webb's 578. He also caught 35 passes for 449 yards and scored five touchdowns.

Both backs ahead of him are gone. Brown tore his ACL in May. Ian Webb transferred to El Camino.

Darian Webb has made the most of the opportunity. He put up 263 rushing yards in a 40-3 win over El Camino and 251 in a 35-7 victory over Poway. He ranks third among San Diego Section rushers, behind Mountain Empire's Elisha Robinson (838 yards) and Eastlake's David Branco (736).

MacNeal told the Union-Tribune he considers Webb the section's best back. At 5-foot-9 and 194 pounds, Webb can bench press 275 pounds and squat 495, both tops among Carlsbad's running backs.

"Just trust and believe. Your work will take you to great places. In due time," Webb told the Union-Tribune before a Tuesday, Sept. 15, practice.

Webb was born in Detroit and moved to Sarasota, Florida, at age 7 before settling in coastal North County. He spent his sophomore year at San Juan Capistrano JSerra, where he rushed for 355 yards as the team's No. 2 back, then transferred to Carlsbad.

Carlsbad's seniors voted him one of five team captains. On his right forearm, a tattoo reads "Don't rush the process. Trust the process."
