Carlsbad High's varsity boys water polo team lost 12-11 to San Clemente in a non-league road game Thursday, Aug. 27.

The Lancers fell to the Tritons by a single goal in the 4 p.m. matchup at San Clemente. Head coach Michael Mulvey's squad scored 11 goals but could not overcome the hosts, according to MaxPreps.

San Clemente moved to 1-1 on the season with the victory. The Tritons have scored 24 goals and allowed 25 across their first two games.

The one-goal loss came one day after Carlsbad fell 18-11 at Bishop's (La Jolla) on Wednesday, Aug. 26, in another non-league road contest. The Lancers opened the 2026 campaign with back-to-back away losses against tough non-conference opponents, scoring 11 goals in each game.

Carlsbad's league record remains 0-0. All early-season games have been non-conference matchups as the Lancers prepare for CIF San Diego Section play later this fall.

The team next travels to Foothill (Santa Ana) on Wednesday, Sept. 2, for a 4:15 p.m. non-league game. After that, the Carlsbad Unified School District Board of Trustees approved the team's trip to the Santa Barbara Invitational, scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 10, through Saturday, Sept. 12.

Mulvey's Lancers will look to get their first win of the season at Foothill before heading to Santa Barbara for the three-day tournament.
