The Carlsbad Fire Department is accepting applications through 5 p.m. Monday, Sept. 14, for its Fire Explorer Program, a volunteer opportunity for residents ages 15 to 20.

The program is open to Carlsbad residents interested in fire and Emergency Medical Services careers, according to the department's program page. Late submissions will not be accepted.

Selected applicants will attend an eight-day orientation academy in February 2027, led by fire personnel. The academy covers basic fire ground operations and general knowledge of the fire service. Participants must complete various fire ground skills to graduate.

City Manager Geoff Patnoe highlighted the program in his Thursday, Aug. 27, weekly update, describing it as an opportunity for young residents to learn about daily operations and career paths in fire and EMS roles.

What the program involves

After completing the academy, Explorers join fire station ride-alongs where they serve as functioning crew members during 12-hour shifts. They also participate in firefighting training scenarios and monthly trainings.

Explorers work under the direct supervision of Carlsbad Fire Department personnel who volunteer as advisors. During ride-alongs, company officers serve as direct supervisors.

Requirements

Applicants must meet several criteria to qualify:

  • Be between 15 and 20 years old
  • Maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA while in high school
  • Pass an oral interview and a background check covering criminal history, driving record and academic performance
  • Commit to at least 24 volunteer hours per month
  • Maintain a high level of physical fitness

Once the application window closes, selected candidates will be invited to an oral panel interview. Top-scoring candidates will be offered placement in the academy and notified of gear issue and orientation dates.

Explorers must also adhere to the department's grooming and uniform standards and participate in community service events.

How to apply

Applications are accepted electronically through the department's online portal. Interested candidates can find the application on the city's program page.
