Carlsbad High alum Phoenix Johnson is part of Palomar College's receiver rotation, head coach Thomas Kaumeyer said. Kaumeyer named Johnson after the Comets' 60-37 loss to No. 1-ranked Riverside City College on Saturday, Sept. 26.
Johnson, a Class of 2022 Lancer on MaxPreps, is one of four or five receivers Kaumeyer rotates into the lineup. The coach singled out Johnson alongside Princeton Anderson when discussing the group after the game.
"Princeton Anderson is an outstanding receiver as he caught 4 touchdowns today and has been running his patterns in practice along with Phoenix Johnson from Carlsbad, we have about 4 or 5 guys that we rotate," Kaumeyer told The Vista Press.
Anderson finished with 81 yards and two touchdowns in the box score. Johnson's individual stats from the game were not reported.
Palomar struck first. The Comets jumped to an 8-0 lead on a 79-yard touchdown pass on their opening drive, according to a Riverside City College athletics recap. The Tigers answered with 710 total yards of offense, including 391 on the ground, and forced three interceptions to pull away.
Riverside quarterback Chris Cooper completed 14 of 23 passes for 304 yards and two touchdowns while adding 38 rushing yards and a score. Jayden Gooden ran 18 times for a game-high 141 yards. Kurelle Thomas piled up 81 rushing yards and four touchdowns.
Palomar quarterback Noah Schuback threw for 292 yards and four touchdowns in the loss, according to The Vista Press.
The loss dropped Palomar to 2-3 overall and 0-2 in National Southern League play. Riverside stayed unbeaten at 5-0 and 2-0 in league.
The Comets have a bye week before traveling to Southwestern College on Thursday, Oct. 8.
