Carlsbad has spent more than $1.4 million on wildfire mitigation since 2025, City Manager Geoff Patnoe reported in his Thursday, Aug. 27 update.
The investment covers brush management and fuel reduction in preserves and city-owned urban forests including Hosp Grove, along with vegetation management and invasive species removal. The city is now developing a Community Wildfire Protection Plan that will bring together experts and community partners to identify strategies for improving defensible space and reducing wildfire risk.
That plan builds on a Community Risk Analysis developed by Carlsbad Fire, the city's Environmental Sustainability Habitat Management team and Parks & Recreation.
The update also highlighted growth in the city's Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program. Carlsbad added 32 new CERT volunteers in 2026, bringing the citywide total to approximately 250. The 2026 CERT Academy concluded with a full day of practical exercises and a graduation ceremony at Carlsbad Fire Station 5. September is National Emergency Preparedness Month.
Beach stairs resume in September
Construction on the beach stair replacement and sidewalk widening project along Carlsbad Boulevard between Pine and Tamarack avenues will resume in September. The city paused work over the summer so residents and visitors could use the newly widened sidewalk.
The deterioration is visible. In some areas, concrete had chipped away after decades of sea-air exposure, leaving rebar exposed with corrosion and soil erosion around portions of the foundation.
Crews will first finish installing new stairs and railings at Cherry and Hemlock avenues, then replace stairs at Maple and Sycamore avenues. During construction, Carlsbad Boulevard traffic in the work area will drop to one lane in each direction. Portions of the upper sidewalk will close, but at least two beach stairways between Tamarack and Pine avenues will stay open. The grass area south of Hemlock Avenue remains open for public use.
The project is on schedule for completion by summer 2027.
Fire Explorer applications open through Sept. 14
The Carlsbad Fire Department is accepting applications for its Explorer Program through Monday, Sept. 14, at 5 p.m. The program is open to Carlsbad residents ages 15 to 20 who want to learn about careers in fire and emergency medical services. Participants take part in firefighting training scenarios and fire station ride-alongs. The academy begins in February 2027.
TGIF draws nearly 24,000; city earns finance award
The 2026 TGIF summer concert series drew 23,757 attendees across nine concerts at three city parks. The next season begins Friday, June 18, 2027.
Separately, the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) notified Carlsbad that its fiscal year 2024-25 annual financial report earned the Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for the 36th time and the 29th consecutive year. According to the city's update, the GFOA describes the award as the highest form of recognition in governmental accounting and financial reporting.
