Five senior captains are steering Carlsbad High's football team through an unbeaten season, and they host league rival Mission Hills on Friday, Oct. 9, at 7 p.m. for homecoming.
The Lancers (6-0, 1-0 Avocado League) enter the game ranked No. 1 in the San Diego Section and No. 13 in California, according to MaxPreps. Mission Hills (5-1, 1-0) is ranked No. 19 in California and carries a matching 1-0 league record into the matchup.
Seniors Elijah Quebedeaux, Trent Kellas, Darian Webb, Kai Brown and Dylan Sims wear the captain's title for head coach T. Mac Neal's squad this fall. The Lancer Link, the school's student newspaper, profiled all five on Tuesday, Oct. 6, in a feature written by Reagan Biggie.
Each captain described a different approach to leadership. Quebedeaux, a four-year program member, said he leads vocally, picking teammates up after bad plays and walking them through corrections. Kellas said he focuses on accountability and connection off the field, making sure every player on the roster feels recognized.
Webb, who transferred to Carlsbad from JSerra Catholic High School, was voted captain by his teammates. He said he leads by example first and steps in with hands-on coaching when a teammate needs more direction.
"You just show them that you're putting in the work as well," Webb told the Lancer Link. "So, no reason to feel sorry for himself, and just go harder."
Webb's play has backed up his words.
He leads the Lancers with 150.0 rushing yards per game and 15 total touchdowns through six games, per MaxPreps. In the Oct. 3 win over Torrey Pines, Webb rushed for 109 yards and a touchdown and added 53 receiving yards and three more scores, according to the Vista Press.
Kellas told the Lancer Link that the lessons he has learned as a captain, including discipline and putting teammates first, will shape him long after his senior season ends.
The Lancers rolled through their first six opponents. Carlsbad beat Valley Center 49-12 on Friday, Sept. 18, with quarterback Antonio D'Alessandro going 11-for-11 with five touchdown passes, as the San Diego Union-Tribune reported. The Lancers followed that with a 30-7 victory over Torrey Pines on Oct. 3.
Carlsbad hosts San Marcos in its next league game on Friday, Oct. 16, at 7 p.m.
