Chloe Hernandez hit a walk-off solo homer in the eighth inning, lifting Carlsbad past Torrey Pines 3-2 on Saturday, Sept. 26.

The shot to right field at Carlsbad High School ended an extra-inning duel and avenged a 2-0 loss to the Falcons on Wednesday. It also pushed the Lancers to 21-6 overall and 4-4 in league play, according to MaxPreps.

Hernandez finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. She also singled in a run in the bottom of the fourth to help erase an early deficit.

Falcons struck first

Torrey Pines jumped ahead 2-0 in the first inning on a two-run homer to center field by Riley Cullivan, who went 3-for-3 with two RBIs, according to game statistics. Cullivan also pitched seven innings for the Falcons, allowing eight hits and three runs with four strikeouts.

Carlsbad answered in the fourth. Hernandez's RBI single cut the lead to 2-1, and Allison Lasher followed with a sacrifice fly to tie the score at 2-2.

Neither team scored in the fifth, sixth or seventh.

Then Hernandez ended it.

Tillis dominant across six starts

Sofia Tillis pitched all eight innings for the win against Torrey Pines, scattering three hits and two runs while striking out nine and walking five.

The performance capped a week in which Tillis started six games for head coach J. Miller's squad. On Wednesday, she threw four complete games: a 3-0 shutout of Westview with 11 strikeouts and one hit allowed, a 5-0 shutout of La Costa Canyon, a 3-1 win over Mira Mesa with seven strikeouts, and a 5-0 shutout of Rancho Buena Vista. The four-game Wednesday slate suggests a tournament format, though the event was not identified in available records.

On Friday, Sept. 25, Tillis struck out 14 batters in five innings during a 9-6 win over Rancho Buena Vista, then fanned 10 in a 7-1 victory over Westview.
