The Picklr, a Utah-based pickleball franchise, plans to open a 10-court indoor club at 5830 El Camino Real in Carlsbad.

The 36,300-square-foot facility in the Carlsbad Corporate Center would be the city's second major indoor pickleball venue to open in 2026, The Coast News reported. The club is locally owned by Neil Capin and Chris Foote and sits near Upper Deck trading card and collectibles in the business-industrial park.

The facility will include one championship-sized court, a pro shop, private event space and instructional programs. Memberships will cover unlimited open play, league competition, tournaments and access to Picklr locations nationwide, according to the company. The Carlsbad location is part of a national expansion that includes plans for more than 500 locations across the United States.

The Picklr had targeted a late August opening. No confirmation that the facility has opened was available as of Sept. 1.

Second indoor venue in 2026

Pickleball Republic, a separate facility at 2045 Corte Del Nogal with 10 indoor courts and two outdoor courts, held its grand opening on Aug. 22, The Coast News reported. That club operates under different ownership.

Shawn Walker, co-founder of Pickleball Republic, said ahead of his club's Aug. 22 opening, "We want to make it feel like you're a part of something. Kind of like a social club, you want to feel like this is your place."

The demand is real. The Carlsbad City Council approved plans in 2024 to build eight new outdoor courts at Calavera Hills and Stagecoach community parks. Residents had raised concerns about overcrowded conditions and long wait times at the city's six existing courts at Poinsettia Community Park.

The city's adopted fiscal year 2026-27 budget includes funding for those courts, according to city budget documents. Carlsbad Parks Superintendent Roger Havlak said in August that four courts at Calavera Hills should be completed within six months, with four more planned for other areas, according to a Carlsbad Hi-Noon Rotary Club meeting summary.

Construction on those Calavera Hills courts is expected to begin first, with the Stagecoach courts to follow.
