Sage Creek High School students will plant native species to support bees, butterflies and hummingbirds at the Agua Hedionda Lagoon Discovery Center on Saturday, Oct. 3.

The planting runs from 9 a.m. to noon at the Discovery Center, 1580 Cannon Road. Students can register at luma.com/p6q23yef. The event counts toward community service hours.

The project is one of more than 150 events during the second annual San Diego Climate Week, which runs Oct. 1–8 across the region, according to the Coronado Times.

The school's announcement said the hands-on work will help restore native habitat and support biodiversity at the lagoon. The event is tagged #BobcatsGiveBack, part of the school's broader community service program.

The 400-acre Agua Hedionda Lagoon is home to 192 species of birds, 70 species of fish and 100 species of plants, according to the Agua Hedionda Lagoon Foundation. The foundation, a certified Carlsbad Green Business, was named the city's Sustainability Champion in July 2025 for its environmental education and conservation work.

The foundation's education team hosts more than 9,000 students a year through field trip programs, according to a November 2025 episode of the Carlsbad: People, Purpose and Impact podcast. At the Discovery Center, visitors can learn about composting, native plants and how to sort waste properly, according to the city.

The foundation is also working with two California Climate Action Corps (CCAC) fellows, Riley Millan and Sophia McGovern, on projects including native plant restoration and an oyster shell recycling program during the 2025–2026 service term, according to the foundation's conservation page. The fellows' habitat work aligns with the kind of planting Sage Creek students will do Saturday.

Erin Hardin, the foundation's director of community relations, described the organization's draw in that November 2025 podcast episode: "It combines everything I love: education, kids, animals, and the environment … at Agua, we get daily joy—watching people connect with animals, learn on our trails, and fall in love with the lagoon."

Saturday's planting adds a high school volunteer component to the foundation's ongoing habitat restoration at the lagoon.
