Sage Creek's varsity girls volleyball team ran its record to 8-1 on Saturday, Aug. 22, sweeping through three tournament matches and dropping only one set all day.

The Bobcats dispatched Brawley 2-0 (25-13, 25-10) in the most lopsided result, holding Brawley to a combined 23 points across two sets. They followed with a 2-0 win over Steele Canyon (25-22, 25-18) and outlasted Fallbrook 2-1 (25-23, 19-25, 15-12) in their lone three-set match of the day, according to results reported by D. Savage.

The Fallbrook contest was the only time Sage Creek surrendered a set on Saturday. Fallbrook took the second frame 25-19 before the Bobcats closed out the decider 15-12. Fallbrook dropped to 5-6 on the season with the loss.

Brawley had no answer for the Sage Creek attack. The Wildcats managed just 13 kills as a team, with L. Rubin leading Brawley at six kills on a .188 hitting percentage, according to MaxPreps boxscore data. Individual Sage Creek statistics were not reported. Brawley fell to 4-3.

Steele Canyon, which entered the match at 9-4, posed the stiffest competition on paper but couldn't push the Bobcats to a third set.

The 8-1 start came with one blemish earlier in the tournament. Sage Creek fell to Steele Canyon 0-2 in a separate match when the Bobcats stood at 5-1, before avenging that loss later in the day. The strong Saturday followed a 2-1 win over West Hills on Friday, Aug. 21, when Sage Creek was still 4-0.

The early returns mark a strong foundation as non-conference play continues. Sage Creek returns home to face El Camino (Oceanside) on Wednesday, Sept. 9, at 6 p.m., followed by Mira Mesa on Wednesday, Sept. 16, at 6:15 p.m.
