Carlsbad's girls flag football team shut out Steele Canyon 27-0 at home Thursday, Aug. 27, improving to 4-2 on the season.

The Lancers held the Cougars scoreless in a non-league matchup of teams that entered with identical 3-2 records. The 5:15 p.m. contest pitted two CIF San Diego Section-ranked programs against each other, with Carlsbad at No. 21 and Steele Canyon at No. 24, according to MaxPreps.

Quarterback Courtney Clemons leads Carlsbad's offense, averaging 153.3 passing yards and 164.8 total yards per game entering Thursday. Senior wide receiver Georgia Hawk is averaging 62.8 receiving yards and 6.8 points per game this season. Hawk is ranked No. 65 on MaxPreps' national Top 100 girls flag football players to watch list after posting 1,624 receiving yards and 30 touchdowns last season.

The defense pitched the shutout. Alana Gomes leads the unit with 1.5 sacks per game, and Brooke Johnson is pulling in 0.7 interceptions per contest this season.

Steele Canyon, based in Spring Valley, fell to 3-3. The Cougars entered the game averaging 181.8 total yards and 13.6 points per game, led by quarterback Kallan Shaw at 92.2 passing yards per game and receiver Allicia Lambert at 39.0 receiving yards per game.

The shutout came one day after Carlsbad routed crosstown rival Sage Creek 48-12 on Wednesday, Aug. 26, as we reported Thursday. The Lancers have now outscored opponents 157-106 through six games, entering the Steele Canyon game averaging 284.8 total yards per contest.

Carlsbad has not yet begun league play, with all six games coming in non-league action.
