Karen Tsuru, a Carlsbad native who earned All-America and all-conference honors during three seasons at Oregon, has transferred to Eastern Michigan University's women's golf team.

EMU head coach Josh Brewer announced the addition on Wednesday, Aug. 26. Tsuru has two years of eligibility remaining. She joins the Eagles' 2026-27 roster alongside first-year Laura Gorgees Baeta from Spain and transfer Constanza Quiroga from Troy University.

Tsuru, who attended San Diego Virtual School, was rated the No. 11 recruit in the Class of 2023 by Golfweek when she signed with Oregon. Her honors with the Ducks include a 2025-26 Golfweek Preseason All-American Third Team selection, 2024-25 WGCA All-America Honorable Mention, and All-Big Ten Conference First Team recognition.

She won her first collegiate title at the Juli Inkster Invitational in March 2025, tying for the top spot at 13-under 203. In 2024-25, she finished ranked No. 33 nationally in the Scoreboard/Clippd rankings and shot in the 60s nine times. During her time at Oregon, she rose as high as No. 46 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings.

Tsuru also competed in the 2026 Augusta National Women's Amateur.

On the team stage, she helped Oregon reach the NCAA Championships in 2023 and 2025. In 2025, the Ducks advanced to the national semifinals, where Tsuru went 1-1 in match play. Her win came 3&2 over Lauryn Nguyen in the semifinal round before the team fell to Northwestern.

Brewer said in the announcement that the three incoming players bring "high-level experience in competing and winning against the world's best" and praised their competitive drive.

Tsuru lands at a program that made its first-ever NCAA Championships appearance in 2025-26, climbing to 19th in the national team rankings, according to the Chicago Tribune. The Eagles became the first Mid-American Conference program to receive an at-large NCAA bid. Brewer was named Golfweek National Coach of the Year on June 11.

The program's rise has been fueled by more than $17 million in investment from alumni group GameAbove, including a $10 million practice facility and a 13,000-square-foot indoor golf performance center that opened in January 2024.

There's a Carlsbad connection on the other side, too. Eastern Michigan's 2026 NCAA semifinal run took place at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa. During that May tournament, Brewer told reporters: "I don't think any of us expected to be together in Ypsilanti, Mich., wearing Eastern Michigan gear, representing the school. It's just kind of a blessing for us."

EMU Athletics has not published a 2026-27 women's golf schedule as of Thursday, Aug. 27.
