Volunteers hauled nearly 430 pounds of litter off Carlsbad Village streets Saturday, Aug. 15, pushing the neighborhood clean-up program's lifetime total past 2.75 tons.

The two-hour effort, organized by the Carlsbad Village Association, drew neighbors, families and local business owners to Pure Project Carlsbad Village on State Street starting at 9:30 a.m. By 11:30 a.m., the group had bagged 429.8 pounds of trash, topping the April event's 374.48-pound haul by roughly 55 pounds.

The morning also marked a first: nearly 20 students from the Carlsbad Educational Foundation Student Leadership Council joined the effort. The program serves ninth- and 10th-graders attending Carlsbad Unified School District schools, according to the foundation's website. The Carlsbad Village Association said in its post-event recap that the students worked alongside other volunteers throughout the morning.

With the Aug. 15 haul added, the program has now removed 5,500.27 pounds of trash from the Village since it launched. That is more than 2.75 tons kept off sidewalks, gutters and shared spaces.

How the program works

Pure Project supplies grain bags and litter pickers for each event. Handel's Homemade Ice Cream donates repurposed ice cream buckets used to collect trash. Baba Coffee fuels volunteers with complimentary coffee on event days.

Volunteers who collected at least two pounds on Aug. 15 received $1 off a pint at Pure Project, a free single-scoop card from Handel's and a complimentary coffee from Baba Coffee.

The Carlsbad Village Association described the Aug. 15 event as its last scheduled Community Clean-Up for a while. No future date has been announced.
